the fashion girl’s guide to layering with leather

What if we told you that every single street style star has one thing in common? Their sense of style may range from Nicole Warne’s polished perfection to Veronika Heilbrunner’s unabashed eclecticism, but they all share one little secret: they layer.

Master the art of layering and suddenly, a whole new world of options opens up in your wardrobe. Pieces once deemed worthy of one season only take on new status as all-year-rounders; your casual pieces look instantly cooler; your classics turn fashion-forward.

The effortless layering look exemplified by the crème de la crème of models off-duty and fashion industry favourites goes a little something like this: take the seasons’s gloriously voluminous bell sleeve cotton shirts, worn over flared black pants or denim, and throw on a leather jacket over the top. Allow your sleeves to poke out from your leather jacket and voila! You’re layering like a pro.

The trick is to show glimpses of absolutely everything you’re wearing, in an artfully disheveled sense. Channel the ‘90s styling of Bella Hadid by melding silky slips and lace camisoles with logo tees, a leather jacket and shades. Always shades.

Over-the-knee boots are made for layering and have found favour with the style set in a major way. In inky suede, they add yet another textural element to an ensemble made up of supple leather moto, luxe fur gillet, jeans and top. Or show a flash of skin by teaming thigh-high boots with a mini-dress or skirt.

Drape a blanket scarf over the top of your leather jacket on chilly days – it’s a look that works particularly well with a sleek second skin jacket as it balances the oversized silhouette of the drapery.

Tie an oversized, slouchy knit around your waist to break up a leather jacket and leather skirt combo – the knit should fall close to the hem of your skirt, or even past it, to give the effect of a cosy overlay.

For something altogether more directional, triple layer your leather: think black leather moto jacket, black leather leggings and tan leather skirt over the top. Teaming skirts with tailored black trousers or sleek leather leggings is emerging as a major trend, championed by the likes of Margaret Zhang.
